Manuscript editor

The writing surface for the selected manuscript.

The manuscript editor opens when you select a manuscript in the Explorer. It is the writing surface for text, structure, and block-level production choices.

Move the pointer over a block to show its comment and block-action controls just above it. The controls hide while you drag to select text. Press Escape to close an open block-action menu or dismiss the controls.

Use project and book settings for defaults. Use the manuscript editor for edits and manuscript-specific decisions.

Entry-level capacity is 18,000 Unicode code points per manuscript and 100 project assets per account. Your account's effective limits may differ. The editor shows text usage above 90% of its limit. Image files do not consume the text allowance, but authored alternative text and captions do. If an existing manuscript exceeds a lower limit, you can read it or reduce its text, but cannot add more until it fits.

Comments & tasks separates editorial discussions from assignments. Choose Add comment or Add task. Category keeps the existing editorial categories. Higher Issue severity numbers mean more serious problems, not better writing. Replies inherit the thread category and severity.

  • 0 - Idea: the current text is not causing a real problem.

  • 1 - Minor: small cleanup or low-risk consistency issue.

  • 2 - Worth addressing: should probably be fixed, but does not break this category.

  • 3 - Noticeable: weakens the reading experience or causes confusion.

  • 4 - Serious: likely to affect quality, audience acceptance, or editorial readiness.

  • 5 - Print-blocking: do not print the book until this issue is addressed.

Hover over an editable block to see Listen (play), Insert (+), an existing Comments & tasks count when there are comments, and Block actions (gear), in that order. Listen opens Listen to selection for that block; it is absent for Print only, Neither, read-only, and Reference and Guidance blocks. The comment count opens the existing discussion. In Insert (+), Add comment appears first whenever permitted, even if comments already exist; a separator follows only when other insertion actions are available. A read-only commenter sees Add comment alone, without a separator. Math inserts at the caret; Math After adds a block after this one. Expand More blocks for code, inset, diagram, quote, and divider blocks.
